Nothing says american quite like the cowboy, and to dress like him we first have to look at a few basic things, what does the cowboy wear that makes him a cowboy? or rather how does he wear it?
well there is the cowboy hat
then there are the cowboy chaps
Chaps were designed to add an extra layer of protection between your pants and the elements
and lets not forget the cowboy boots
Cowboy boots were designed as slips offs, so in case the horse were to bolt off or throw the rider, the boot would just slip off and not drag the rider and possibly kill him.
Notice also that the cowboy boot has a beveled heel, so that the rider can rest his foot in the hoops of the riding equipment
another staple of the cowboy attire is the duster coat
the tight slim fitting pants
and the button up work shirt
with the neck bandanna
I think the neck bandanna was designed as a sweat catch, so the sweat the came off your body went into the cloth, still touching your skin it kept you cooler longer.
or as a method of disguise,
the belt buckle
the bolo tie
and that pretty much sums it up, mix and match with those ingredients and you got yourself a cowboy!
